Parkdale-bred, Nelson was raised on music ranging from Portuguese folk music & Abba to Otis Redding & The Beatles, from Trenchtown to Motown, playing guitar and writing songs came naturally. Along with forming his own bands he started to play in various rock & blues bands around town. By chance, Nelson dove into the role of “musical director” of the original “Comfort Zone” where late night jams were the norm everynight of the week until the wee hours of the morning. Jamming with musicians of every style of music as well as having the good luck and fortune to jam with members of The Jeff Healey band, Tom Cochrane’s band and Lenny Kravitz’s band. Eventually, out of the necessity of having to front his own band to play the songs the way he heard them in his head, Nelson discovered that he could vocally emulate and channel the great soul singers he admired and loved. Armed with his guitar, his voice and a song he set off to meet up with like-minded musicians who prefer to “serve the music” instead of themselves…
Nelson’s resume includes stints in The Beggarz, Reuben Cherry, & Selective Collective along with a ton of rock, soul, funk, blues, country & reggae bands that no one's ever heard of…
Darin started playing drums at the age of 12 after his father bought him a snare drum & hi-hat. It wasn't long after that he added a few cardboard boxes to have a few toms. A year later a he had a full drum kit & started taking lessons at Champlain College in Montreal. At 18, after playing in various local rock bands in Montreal he started studying again with Ken Rabo - a master of time & groove - Darin quickly caught on to the concept.
During these years he also started taking bass, guitar & vocal lessons with Leo DeLuca from Avatra in Montreal's Plateau area.
At around 20, the band that Darin was playing in needed a bass player, so he volunteered to leave the drum kit behind & pick up the bass - he has never looked back.
Over the last 20 years Darin has played with Stone Flower, Crowface, & a host of rock & blues bands in Montreal & Toronto that you probably have never heard of.
It was about 10 years ago when he met Nelson & began what would be the most creative part of his career. Darin has produced & recorded the last two Melting Pot albums & is currently planning pre-production for Melting Pot's first studio recording.
